Like a number of films on this list, it's an example of what we clam we want, yet we ignored or scorned it. The plot has a few holes to reflect upon after the fact, but it still stands out in a sea of big-studio releases aimed at kids or older teens. Lily Tomlin is terrific, per usual, and the film's specificity of its world enhances its authenticity. The film never had a chance at the box office due to a marketing campaign that went out of its way to avoid revealing what the film was actually about, but the picture deserved better from critics allegedly sick of the likes of The Hangover part III or Identity Thief. Like The Big Year from a couple years back, it was a rare big studio release that qualifies as a genuinely "adult" comedy.įey and Rudd deliver solidly authentic performances in a film that takes their wants and fears as seriously as any good drama. It was a light and small-scale human comedy pitched at honest-to-goodness grownups. This Tina Fey/Paul Rudd comedy is exactly the kind of low-key, adult-skewing studio release we all claim that we want. These will be in alphabetical order save one at the end. Some are genuinely good films, some initially received positive reviews before a backlash set in, some are just coming out but are getting hammered in strange ways, and others are bad without being the sort of war crimes that they were accused of.
The first one is generally one of my favorites, a look at films that arguably got bum rap from critics or more of a lashing than they deserved. This will be the first of a handful of year-end pieces, highlighting the year that is just about to end. Here we go, diving into the year-in-review for the year that was 2013.
